Pregnancy: Weeks 6 – 10

Changes in fetus
• Over 1 inch in length from crown to rump
• Roughly 1/10 of an ounce in weight
• Tail has almost disappeared
• Sweat glands have started to develop
• Basic structure of all major organs in place
• Primitive bones form facial features
• Heart is now a four-chambered organ
Fetus, weeks 6-10

Changes in you
• Absence of menstruation
• Fatigue and sleepiness
• Frequent urination
• Nausea, possible vomiting
• Possible heartburn, indigestion
• Occasional headaches
• Food aversions or cravings
• Breast tenderness, fullness
Pregnant woman, weeks 6-10


What will happen at your first office visit:
  • Weight and blood pressure check
  • Complete blood count
  • Urine test for sugar and protein
  • Test for hepatitis-B surface antigen
  • RPR test to screen for syphilis
  • Blood type and Rh-antibody screen
  • Rubella titer
  • Urinalysis and/or urine culture
  • One-hour glucola screen for patients over 35 or with history of large baby, gestational diabetes, strong family history of diabetes, or previous stillbirth
  • Hemoglobin electrophoresis for African-Americans and patients with certain other ethnic backgrounds
  • HIV screen, if desired by patient
  • Pap smear and screening for chlamydia infection in the cervix
  • Initial sonogram to confirm expected date of delivery
